The Federal Council validated the revision of the driving license on 14.12.2018. The most important changes are the shortening of the phase 2 training, the possibility of driving a manual vehicle with the automatic license and the possibility of applying for a cat. B already from 17 years old.

Here is a summary of the main changes:

Réduction formation phase 2 sur une journée

The additional course in the 2nd phase will only last one day instead of two. This day must be completed within one year of the driving test. The date of entry into force is January 1, 2020.

Permis d'élève conducteur dès 17 ans

Candidates aged 17 will now be able to acquire a student driver’s license for category B cars. This directive will come into force on January 1, 2021.

Conduite manuelle avec permis automatique

Anyone who passes the practical exam with an automatic transmission car will now be allowed to drive manual type vehicles. This from February 1, 2019.

Other modifications

Here is a quick list of the other changes that are part of this driver’s license review:

  • People will no longer be able to take the unlimited Moto A license directly. They must first hold category A limited to 35 kW for at least two years.
  • The Swiss categories will be harmonized with what is in force in the EU. Upgrade of the minimum age for the different categories.
  • Compulsory theory course and motorcycle courses are valid for an unlimited period. This also applies to successful theoretical and practical exams.
  • Holders of blue licenses are required to exchange them for a credit card-sized license by January 31, 2024 at the latest.
